For forty days, Goliath, the champion of the Philistines had been defying the armies of the living God. King Saul and the rest of the Israelites , were cowering in fear and not even attempting to meet the challenge. David arrives on the scene with provisions and greetings for his three eldest brothers from their father. He happens to hear the challenge of the giant as well as the account of the great riches, exemption from taxes and marriage to the king’s daughter that is promised to the man who kills this enemy. David has to battle with his older brother’s taunts, and the king’s lack of faith in his abilities, when he is subsequently brought before Saul. David is confidant in the LORD’S ability to deliver him from Goliath’s hand , and gives his testimony of being victorious over lions and bears when they had attacked the sheep in his care. He rejects the heavy armor of the king, and chooses his staff, five smooth stones from the brook which he put in his shepherd’s bag, and his sling. Rushing to meet the defiant giant, he exclaims,”…I will strike you…that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. Then all this assembly shall know that the LORD does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the LORD’s and He will give you into our hands”.
