Josiah – Boy King

The birth of Josiah was prophesied 325 years before he was born…check out the exciting  prophecy in 1 Kings 13: 1-2.

Josiah was only eight years old when he became king of Judah and ” he did what was right in the sight of the LORD, and walked in all the ways of his father David; and did not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young (16), he began to seek after the God of David his (fore)father; and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah”  of everything associated with idol worship.  Two years later he began to repair the great temple that Solomon had built.  During the renovation, Hilkiah, the high priest,  found the neglected Book of the Law and when it was read to the king, he tore his clothes.  He was quick to inquire of the Lord because he understood that great wrath and judgement would come on their nation as a result of  breaking their covenant and forsaking the Living God.  The prophetess, Huldah, told the king’s messengers that the Lord would spare the king from seeing the curses his nation  had reaped for their  many years of continual idolatry. Josiah had all the people gather  while he read them all the words of the book. Then this amazing man made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD , and to keep His commandments with all of his heart and all of his soul.   He then commanded the people to celebrate the Passover  and “no Passover like it had been kept in Israel since the days of Samuel the prophet”. Josiah’s life is recorded in 2 Chronicles: 34-35 and 2 Kings 22 – 23:30 and shows us a great example of  what is needed for spiritual renewal.  For personal Bible study,  I highly recommend the teaching of Matt Fox of “The Way, The Life, the Truth” radio program archives of 2 Chronicles 33-36.

You will need to pre-cut the crowns on poster board and since head sizes vary greatly,  make sure you measure  them to each head before you make your final cuts and staple the ends.(You may need to make them longer than 20 inches so leave extra room…you can always trim to fit!!!) Plastic jewels are a nice touch but you can improvise.(shell buttons, sequins, foil etc) A  metallic gold marker would be helpful in writing the verse. The scripture I used is a phrase from David’s  Psalms (1 Chron. 16:29, Psalm 29:2, 96:9)”Worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness”, but you could use any praiseworthy verse.
