Mary Anoints Jesus

Mary's Gift

Mary’s Gift

A week before our LORD went to the cross to purchase our redemption, He was honored at a dinner . Lazarus sat with Jesus and His disciples at the table while Martha served.  Mary came , bringing with her an alabaster flask of precious oil which cost approximately a year’s wages.  Matthew 26:7 and Mark 14:3 expound on the details stating that  Mary honored her Lord by anointing His head with the fragrant oil.  Then she proceeded to anoint Jesus’ feet with the rest of the oil and wipe them with her hair. What a lavish display of love and devotion! But the texts read that the disciples became indignant and criticized her sharply because it was thought that the oil should have been sold and the money given to the poor.  This idea was probably ignited by Judas, who held the purse for the group and used to steal the funds from it. Jesus came to Mary’s defense showing His appreciation of her gift with the added words “…Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her.”

Mary’s gift – worksheet

Pre-cut  the slit  with x-acto for Mary’s hair to slide through.  Color page, including “accessories” then separate page and cut them out.  Take a 3 1/2 inch long piece of cardboard and at the top of this lay 6 pieces of  black heavyduty thread  (4 inches long)  which you will tape on each side.  Wrap black thread at least 50 times around the length of your cardboard.  Gather your threads at the top, remove tape and make a couple of tight knots. Trim threads leaving about an inch  and cut all the threads at the bottom of the cardboard which will give you a nice “ponytail”. Take a small piece of magic tape and wrap this around your 12 threads at the top of the ponytail…press to give you a stiff end to thread your ponytail through the slit you have made.  Trim “hair” if needed.  Add a small dot of tacky glue to where you will attach the bandana piece and a dot under the top of the ponytail , and press for a minute. If you don’t want the hair to swish around add a small piece of rolled tape to the bottom of her hair. ( underneath).  It might be a good idea to bring an old toothbrush in case the “hair” gets tangled. Optional: add vase and flowers
