Scripture reference from Revelation 12:7-9 – ” And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer. So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world…”
If you have taught a lesson on the original sin from Genesis 3, no doubt you had conversations with your kids regarding the serpent…the creature that Satan chose to indwell. This is what I teach kids (upper elementary age and older) about their foe: He is a created being…originally very beautiful. (Ezekiel 28:15) He is able to transform himself in order to deceive. (a serpent in Gen.3:1 and as an angel of light in 2 Corinthians 11:14) He lies to everyone….mostly about the nature of sin – that it is o.k. and it will not hurt you; and about the character of God -that He is not good or trustworthy. (John 8:44, Revelation 12:9) His fate is sealed…”The devil who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.” (Revelation 20:10) He is under God’s authority (Job 2:1) All of these facts are to prepare us for spiritual warfare because our enemy is prowling around looking for someone to destroy. (1 Peter 5:8) We engage the enemy by putting on the whole armor of God. (Ephesians 6:10-18) For further study you can read Isaiah 14 which describes Lucifer’s fall from his exalted position as an anointed cherub.
Note: ideas for drawing the dragon image were borrowed from dragon clip art royalty-free image #6 (graphicsfactory.com) I embellished the scales by tracing on the foil seal from a nut can. Cut out pieces and imprint design with a pencil on a soft surface like a magazine before gluing in place.
